Why Crimson Clover

The Cover Crop Philosophy

The name Crimson Clover Family Services is rooted in a practice Katherine finds meaningful in her personal life as a gardener and small-scale farmer: the use of cover crops. Clover is planted between seasons not for harvest, but to fix what has been depleted, stabilize the soil, and prepare the ground for whatever comes next. It is quiet, patient work, done entirely in service of what grows after. Crimson clover is one such plant, commonly seen painting the vast fields of the Willamette Valley in deep red each season, its blooms alive with honeybees. Katherine brings that same philosophy to every family she works with. A custody evaluation is the investigative report: an honest, careful assessment of what the soil looks like now, what has been depleted, and what conditions will allow something healthy to grow. It helps the court and the family understand what to plant next. Parenting time coordination is the cover crop implementation: the hands-on work of tending the soil of co-parenting conflict, so the ground is ready for what their children need to grow.

Custody Evaluations

A thorough, impartial process designed to give the court the clearest possible picture of what parenting arrangements will best serve your children.

What is a Custody Evaluation?

A custody evaluation is a formal, court-involved assessment conducted by a neutral mental health or legal professional. The evaluator gathers comprehensive information about each parent, the children, and the family dynamics in order to provide the court with informed, evidence-based recommendations.

Katherine brings a rare combination of legal and psychological training to this role. Having spent twelve years in family law litigation with a focus on high conflict custody matters and contested adoptions, she understands deeply how the legal system works and what courts need to make sound decisions for children.

What Does the Process Involve?

A custody evaluation typically includes individual interviews with each parent, interviews with the children conducted age-appropriately, review of relevant records and documentation, collateral contacts with individuals who know the family such as teachers, therapists, and other professionals, and psychological testing when indicated.

Katherine approaches each evaluation with neutrality, thoroughness, and a child-centered focus. Her goal is never to favor one parent over another, but to offer the court a clear, honest picture of what arrangement will allow each child to thrive.

How Long Does It Take?

The timeline varies depending on the complexity of the case, the number of collateral contacts required, and scheduling factors. Katherine will discuss the anticipated timeline with you and the relevant parties at the outset of the engagement.

Evaluation May Include

  • Individual parent interviews
  • Child interviews
  • Parent-child observation
  • Review of records and documents
  • Collateral contacts
  • Psychological testing (when indicated)
  • Written report with recommendations

Services

Parenting Time Coordination

Practical, ongoing support to help parents implement their parenting plan, resolve disputes, and keep the focus where it belongs, on their children.

What is a Parenting Time Coordinator?

A Parenting Time Coordinator (PTC) is a neutral professional appointed to help parents implement and follow a court-ordered parenting plan. When co-parenting conflict makes it difficult to navigate day-to-day decisions, a PTC provides structure, guidance, and when necessary, binding decisions within the scope authorized by the court.

Katherine's background as a family law attorney gives her a precise understanding of parenting plans, court orders, and the legal framework within which families are operating. Her training in child and adolescent development means she keeps children's needs and developmental stages at the center of every decision.

What Does a Parenting Time Coordinator Do?

A PTC helps parents work through disputes that arise in the implementation of their parenting plan, including disagreements about schedules, holidays, school decisions, extracurricular activities, communication, and more. Rather than returning to court for every conflict, families have access to a knowledgeable professional who can help resolve issues quickly and with minimal disruption to children.

The PTC role is not therapy and is not mediation. Katherine does not advocate for either parent. Her role is to facilitate implementation of the existing plan and, within the authority granted by the court, make decisions when parents cannot agree.

How Are Decisions Made?

Within the scope of authority granted by the appointing court order, the PTC may make binding decisions when parents cannot reach agreement. Katherine works carefully within those boundaries, maintaining thorough documentation and operating transparently so that all parties understand the basis for every decision.

PTC Services Include

  • Parenting plan implementation support
  • Dispute resolution between parents
  • Schedule and holiday coordination
  • Communication coaching and monitoring
  • Decision-making within court-authorized scope
  • Documentation and court reporting

About

Katherine Denning

Katherine Denning brings a unique blend of legal experience, psychological insight, and lived understanding to her work with families. After twelve years of practicing family law litigation, during which she focused on high conflict custody matters and contested adoption proceedings, Katherine transitioned to neutral, child-focused work with families in the family court system.

This has allowed her to remain active in the legal system she deeply values while applying learned psychological principles to continue her work with community members experiencing some of the most difficult chapters any of us can face. As a Parenting Time Coordinator and Custody Evaluator, she channels her respect for the legal system and the families within it into roles focused on stability, thoughtful guidance, and the well-being of children.

For those unfamiliar with these services, a Parenting Time Coordinator helps parents implement and follow their parenting plans, resolve day-to-day disputes, and reduce conflict so children can thrive. A Custody Evaluator conducts impartial, in-depth assessments to offer the court informed recommendations regarding parenting time, decision-making, and the best interests of the child. Katherine approaches both roles with clarity, neutrality, and a deep respect for the families she serves.

That perspective is personal. Raised in a small community in a family that experienced divorce and later blended family dynamics, Katherine understands firsthand the challenges and resilience that come with change. She was also shaped by her grandfather, a University of Oregon graduate and dedicated lawyer whose integrity and community service helped set her on this path. Go Ducks!

Outside her professional work, Katherine tends a hobby farm, caring for dogs, chickens, sheep, and beehives. She has found that caring for animals is its own kind of education in observation, patience, and reliability, the same qualities she brings to every family she serves.
